Plans on Help Sumba Island
This project has the priorities in improving primary school education and improving health in the villages especially of women and children. Without at least some healthy and educated young people coming up, the conditions here will never change. To improve the living conditions in this area the project will solve the following:
- Difficulties to get clean water
- The insufficient condition of the school buildings
- The bad condition of the school furniture for teachers and students
- The toilet facilities and sanitary conditions
- Insufficient teaching facilities, such as writing books, pencils, erasers, textbooks and reference books
- The health condition of students

Kalekembe
Before our Rotary Club Bali Kuta “Sumba committee” team left to Sumba, we received from other projects the information that we should visit the location Waitabula and the Kalekembe School of that village. During our visit of this very remote area we observed:
Clean water
- The water table is mostly 30-80 meters below ground so that wells are impractical.
- The people collect rainwater in buckets or drums during the rainy season and have to walk long distances to other sources of water, usually small ponds are contaminated by animals.
- The project will drill a well which will provide a sufficient amount of fresh water for the school facilities and the neighboring houses.
Education
This school is in a very remote area and is constructed out of grass leaves and has absolute no facilities.
Actually there should be 120 children attending the school, but due to the poor facilities, only 77 school children are able to attend. This school is due to lack of facilities, that is almost impossible to bring education to children. Due to no water supply there are no hygienic facilities.
- The building is completely inadequate.
- The school furniture for students and teacher are very inadequate.
- There are no toilets or showers for students/teachers available.
- There is no electricity in that area.
- There is no - or complete insufficient teaching material like pencils, writing books and other tools available.
- The physical health conditions of the students are due to malnutrition shocking / terrible.
The project will provide 4 fully equipped class rooms, toilet facilities incl. showers. The project will build a small kitchen to provide additional meals to ease the malnutrition of the school children. To run this facility the project will provide a generator to provide the electricity. The clean drinking water, the schooling and the additional meals should be provided - if possible at no cost, or as low as possible to the surrounding families only at the school facilities.
Health
A family, for example consist of parents and three children, can afford in average 15 liters of water in 3 days, which cost Rp. 1.000, - for 1 container. Due to the very limited availability of funds, there is very little/no water left for body hygiene. The people live from growing corn, beans, peas, sweet potatoes. Due to that, there is, especially for children, a dangerous malnutrition.
The project will serve the students with selected additional meals from a nutrition specialist to provide the lacking important vitamins and minerals.

Now on to some budgeting for the school building:
- One three classroom building of local government standard. Rooms 7m x 7m.
- Two separate buildings each with two toilets and one washroom (1 building for girls, 1 building for boys). The floors and half of the walls tiled, and the Rotary Club Kuta will provide suitable tiles from Bali because locally not available.
- A separate permanent building, 7m x 7m, to the same standard as the school building, to be used partly as a school office and partly as a preparation room for simple food for the students.
- 1 water tank above ground, but at ground level (not a high tank).
- 1 house for the generator to be used for pumping water.
- PVC pipes underground from the water tank to the toilets.
- Furniture for three classrooms with an average of 40 children each.
